BEDWIN & THE HEARTBREAKERS

The evolution of a garment’s story from fabric creation, to construction, onto the life it lives when worn is something that is very important to Bedwin & The Heartbreakers’ founder Masafumi “Bebetan” Watanabe and a key focus for BYBORRE for the development of the unique fabrics for Bedwin’s SS20 capsule collection.

Bedwin & The Heartbreakers is a Japanese menswear label that is “about being meticulous with quality, material and fabrics.” The brand draws influences from around the world, from its home country Japan to influences from the West. With a known ability to seamlessly blend street style and tailoring, Bedwin’s attention to fabrics lead to the tweed inspiration of the BYBORRE textiles.

The 8-Bit textiles developed for this project were inspired by swatches of tweed fabrics collected by Bedwin. Twills, herringbones, stripes, and checks covered our Designer’s inspiration boards, creating a landscape to draw on for the final design. The two 8-Bit Jersey’s embody the classic tweed while creating a modern twist with industrialized knitting techniques and performance materials.

When choosing material, the aim was to create a fabric that was both lightweight and comfortable, so the textile would drape effortlessly when constructed into the two spring/summer jackets for this capsule. The final materials used were a premium cotton and Nylstar’s Meryl Hydrogen yarn for the Grape colorway and 100% premium cotton for the Watermelon colorway.

The outcome of the fabrics are two beautiful 8-Bit Jersey fabrics constructed into two Bedwin iconic silhouettes: the MA-1 jacket and the Taylor jacket. From the yarn to final garment and beyond, these pieces carry a strong story of the heritage of the classic tweed developed into an iconic innovative knit.
